Should You Turn Off Advantage+ Creative Enhancements on Static Ads?
Part of Static Facebook Ads for Ecommerce: The Complete Playbook
Turn off any Advantage+ creative enhancement that could change something you need to control, such as your claims, your on-image text or your product's appearance, and test the rest against a clean version before deciding. Meta's Business Help Center says the enhancements available depend on your ad format, placements and whether you use a catalog, that some are on by default, and that you can turn them off at any time. So the real answer is: check every ad, keep what you have tested, and switch off what you cannot afford to have altered.
What Advantage+ creative changes on a static
Advantage+ creative is Meta's set of automated adjustments to your ad's media and text. For a single-image static ad, Meta's help pages describe enhancements that can, depending on availability:
- Adjust the image: cropping or expanding to fit placements, and visual adjustments such as brightness and contrast.
- Add motion: Meta's help center describes "Add animation," a generative AI feature that adds movements like panning or zooming to eligible single images and can animate text in the image.
- Add text overlays: Meta describes "Add overlays," which shows text you provide on top of your creative when it is predicted to help.
- Change or vary text: options that generate or rearrange text variations from your primary text and headline.
- Add elements around the ad: such as relevant comments or catalog items, depending on setup.
The names, defaults and available options change. As of November 4, 2026, Meta's guidance is consistent on one point: review the enhancements section and the ad preview before publishing. Check Meta's current Help Center page "About Advantage+ creative" for the up-to-date list.
Why this matters more for statics
A static ad is designed as one carefully composed frame: hook, product and proof in exact positions. Automated changes can:
- Crop your on-image text or push it into the Stories safe zone.
- Add overlays that duplicate or clash with your own text.
- Animate an image in ways that look off-brand.
- Rewrite copy in ways that change a claim.
Which enhancements to keep, test, or disable
Here is the keep/test/disable matrix we use. It is a starting point based on risk, not a performance claim. Your own tests decide the final setting.
General matrix
| Enhancement type | Default stance | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Placement fitting (crop, expand) | Disable if you upload both 4:5 and 9:16; test if you upload one size | Your own sized files give you control |
| Brightness and contrast or visual touch-ups | Test | Low risk to claims; may help or alter look |
| Add animation | Test | Can add movement, may look off-brand |
| Add overlays | Disable if your image already has text; test if it does not | Duplicate text clutters a static |
| Text variations or generated text | Disable in regulated categories; test elsewhere | Can change claims |
| Translate text | Test only if you sell in those languages | Translation may shift meaning |
| Relevant comments | Test | Depends on your comment quality |
| Catalog items added to the ad | Test if your catalog is clean | Can distract from a single-product concept |
Keep/test/disable by vertical
| Vertical | Placement fitting | Visual touch-ups | Animation | Overlays | Text generation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apparel | Test | Test | Test | Test | Test |
| Home goods | Test | Test | Test | Test | Test |
| Jewelry | Test | Disable if color accuracy matters | Test | Test | Test |
| Skincare and beauty | Test | Disable (appearance changes) | Test | Test | Disable |
| Supplements and health | Test | Test | Test | Disable | Disable |
| Financial or other special categories | Test | Test | Test | Disable | Disable |
Reasoning: in categories where wording and appearance carry compliance risk, you want every word and pixel to be what you approved.
Meta AI-generated backgrounds: good or bad?
It depends on the product and on what is available for your ad type; Meta's background generation feature is not available for every format, so check Meta's current documentation. When it is available:
- Can help when your product photo has a plain background and you want variety without new photography.
- Can hurt when the generated scene misrepresents the product's size, use or setting, or looks unlike your brand.
- Rule: if a generated background could make a viewer believe something untrue about the product, do not use it.
How to preview what will actually serve
- Open the ad in Ads Manager and find the enhancements area of the ad creative section.
- Read every toggle. Note which ones are on by default for this ad.
- Use the preview for each placement: Feed, Stories, Reels and any others in your placement settings.
- Look specifically for: cropped text, covered product, added text that conflicts with yours, animation that distorts the product, rewritten claims.
- Repeat for duplicates. When you duplicate an ad, check its enhancements again; do not assume your earlier choices carried over.
Pre-publish enhancement checklist
- Every enhancement toggle reviewed for this ad
- Previewed in every placement
- On-image text fully visible in each preview
- No added text that contradicts or duplicates yours
- Product color and shape look accurate
- Any generated or rewritten copy checked for claims
- Settings noted in the ad name, e.g. "_ENH-off" or "_ENH-anim"
Advantage+ creative text variations: when to turn them off
Turn off text variations or generated text when:
- You are in a category with strict claim rules (health, supplements, skincare, finance).
- Your offer has legal terms that must appear exactly.
- You are running a test where copy must stay fixed to get a clean result.
Keep them on (as a test) when:
- You have several solid text options and want Meta to match them to people.
- Your copy has no compliance-sensitive claims.
For writing the text options yourself, see Meta ad copy formulas.
Compliance-sensitive verticals
Some products face extra review under Meta's Advertising Standards. In these, automated changes are a risk because you are responsible for what the ad shows.
What to do
- Write every text field yourself and turn off text generation.
- Turn off overlays and visual changes that alter appearance, especially for before/after-style or skin-related images.
- Keep a record (screenshot) of your final preview.
- Read supplement ads on Meta for claim rules in that category.
Testing enhanced vs raw
Do not guess. Run a test.
Setup
- Take one approved static concept.
- Create two ads with identical image, copy, headline and link.
- Ad A (raw): all optional enhancements off.
- Ad B (enhanced): the specific enhancements you want to test on.
- Put them in the same ad set, or in two ad sets with equal budgets if you want even spend. For structure options, see creative testing on a small budget.
Judging
- Let both spend about two to three times your target CPA.
- Compare cost per purchase first, then outbound CTR.
- If the enhanced version wins clearly, keep that enhancement on for similar ads. If results are close, choose based on brand control.
Test one group at a time
If you turn on five enhancements at once and B wins, you do not know which helped. Test visual enhancements together, then text enhancements separately.
Example test log (fill in with your numbers)
| Test | Enhancements on | Spend | CPA | Outbound CTR | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raw | None | ||||
| Visual | Touch-ups, animation | ||||
| Text | Text variations |
Good setup that makes enhancements less necessary
Several enhancements exist to fix common problems, like images not fitting placements. Solve those yourself and you need fewer automated fixes:
- Upload both 4:5 and 9:16 versions. See static ad sizes and safe zones.
- Write your own text variations as separate ads.
- Keep text inside safe zones.
